Megan Lyman of
Gilford is Miss New Hampshire 2012. She competed as Miss Lakes Region
in the 66th Annual Miss New Hampshire Scholarship Program Thursday,
April 26th through Saturday night, April 28, 2012. A 21-year-old Junior
at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire, Megan is seeking a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary and Special Education. A
graduate of Gilford High School, she plans to obtain a Master's Degree
in Special Education and hopes ultimately to become an administrator in
that field. She is the Vice-President of T.E.A.C.H. at New England
College, a member of College Convention, and a member of the New
Hampshire Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
Megan's platform issue is "Make-A-Wish Foundation: Providing Children with Hope, Strength and Joy." She is a member of the Make-A-Wish Speaker’s Bureau and also volunteers as fundraiser creator for the Foundation. Megan’s first experience with Make-A-Wish occurred when she, as a pre-teen, battled a life-threatening soft-tissue sarcoma at Boston Children’s Hospital. Make-A-Wish installed a dance floor in her Gilford Home to fulfill Megan’s wish. Megan had danced since she was three years old and dance has been a large part of her life ever since.
In 2008 Megan served as the 4th Miss New Hampshire’s Outstanding Teen. She is the Director of New England Tap Ensemble and has won numerous dance awards throughout New England. She also tap danced in Halftime, an Off-Broadway production.
During the academic year, Megan has been employed as a waitress at the Weirs Beach Lobster Pound Restaurant, and at Bravo Boutique in Concord. Her scholarship grants amount to more than $28,000 through the Miss New Hampshire and New Hampshire’s Outstanding Teen state competitions, $1000 at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Program, and during her three years of participating in local competitions, another $4500 bringing her total thus far to $33,500.
Megan will compete for the title of Miss America, telecast live on ABC network in January or February of 2013.
